Because I’m using a lot of patterns for Cosplay (and normal clothes) I will write my opinion on patterns that are for sale by pattern companies on my blog. I buy my patterns from Naaipatronen.nl, or in sewing stores in the Netherlands. I usually make US size 10/12, or European size 36/38. My sizes are the following (for size comparison): Height: 172 cm (5’7″), Bust 88 cm (34 inch), Waist 70 cm (27 inch), Hips 105 cm (42 inch).

Pattern company: New Look

Pattern number: 6447

Pattern description: Dress

View made: I attempted making view A, but with how uncomfortable the sleeves were, it turned into B.

Recommended size by pattern: Size 14

Size made: Size 10 – increased size for the skirt if I remember correctly to 14.

Pattern photo:

Instructions:

The instructions were clear. I didn’t read the part about the zipper though because I just put mine in. It might have been different than I did. So I don’t know about that part.

Pattern quality:

The pattern quality is very good. All pieces fit well together.

Pattern sizing:

As always the sizing’s fine as long as you make some size smaller. I always make the size that I’d buy in shops. I always look at the finished size. In hindsight maybe I should have gone a size up. It fits really really snugly now. I’m glad I made the skirt bigger for my hips.

The sleeves though. The sleeves are terrible. So tiny!! The arm holes are super small, and with the sleeves in there, I couldn’t move. XD I ended up just cutting them off. I know I’ve got muscular arms, but I’m sure more people will have this problem, so beware.

My own alterations:

Upped the size at hip level because my size is different from usual.

Fabric used:

Cotton and faux leather.

Conclusion:

I really liked the pattern and how it looks, but with the belt and the shape of it, it pulls on the fabric in a way that’s not so nice. I like the front though, the back a little less. I’d never make the sleeves on this dress again, and I’d make the arm holes bigger. Pff. XD

Instructions:

Instructions were clear. I followed everything meticulously. I was a bit confused by the order of the instructions because of the different views. I really needed the instructions because the pattern was weird. Was a good check for the cross straps and whether I was doing it correctly. I really liked it!

Pattern quality:

The pattern quality is very good. All pieces fit well together.
Pattern sizing:

As always the sizing’s fine as long as you make some size smaller. I always make the size that I’d buy in shops. I always look at the finished size. It was totally fine. Fits well, although it’s a bit larger at the bust. I think it would fit better without the cross straps but with the closed back view. If I’d make it again, I would not make this view again. Maybe I’d lengthen it a bit next time.

My own alterations:

Nothing.

Fabric used:

Japanese cotton.

Conclusion:

Lovely pattern, cute looking jumpsuit. Good instructions. Would make it again but a different view and get the bodice a few cm longer.

Pattern description: Skirt in different variations
View made: View C
Recommended size by pattern: Size 14
Size made: Size 12
Pattern photo:

Instructions:

The instructions were super easy. It has very few steps and are easy to follow. Just sew all panels together, put a zipper between the two back panels, make a lining and finish the edges. Because I omitted the lining all together, it was even easier.

Pattern quality:

The pattern quality is very good. All pieces fit together well, and with the high-low skirt that I made, it’s very hard to make a mistake.

Pattern sizing:

The sizing is fine, as long as you make a size smaller than they recommend. It’s the usual with patterns. However, I did take in 12 cm on either side of my waist, but left the skirt the same size at the hips. It was kind of what I was afraid of when I bought this pattern, the fit is great for my hips, but my waist is a lot smaller so the shape doesn’t fit. It’s not made for extreme hourglass figures like mine, but for people with a different shape it will probably be just fine. In any case, the seams are easy to take in.

My own alterations:

I left out the lining as well as the hook and eye, and I took in the side seams to have a better fit at my waist.

Fabric used:

95% cotton, 5% elastan.

Conclusion:

Good pattern, pretty skirt, it’s just a little bit of work to make the sizing fit correctly.

Pattern description: Sleeveless blouse with buttons at the back and a peplum.

View made: View C

Recommended size by pattern: Size 14

Size made: Size 12

Pattern photo:

Instructions:

Very clear for the most part. I had to read the instructions about the bias-tape twice because it isn’t put together as I expected. However, I finished making it with the instructions and they were easy enough to follow otherwise.

Pattern quality:

Very good. I was surprised that all pattern pieces fit together so well. Even the peplum pleats are at the same places as the seams are on the bodice. I was positively surprised. Great pattern! The buttons are even placed at spots I can actually reach on my own. XD
Pattern sizing:

The sizing is fine, as long as you make a size smaller than they recommend. I still think it’s a little loose around my torso, but since it is a blouse it doesn’t have to fit very tightly.

My own alterations:

None. I might want to add some interfacing where the buttons are placed next time though. The back isn’t very sturdy either. The top button hangs down a little bit. Instead of bias tape I cut ribbons from the same fabric as my shirt to use and finished it with my overlock machine.

Fabric used:

Japanese patterned cotton.
Conclusion:

Good high quality pattern. I was very positively surprised. I definitely still want to make the other views. I’ll update this review once I do. 😉 Will take a while though.

Pattern description: Kimono

View made: View A

Size made: Size 10

Pattern photo:

Instructions:

This was my very first project! I read through the instructions several times before I started and I had no problem following them. They were very good.

Pattern quality:

Not very good. The pattern pieces are too long for the paper and have cut-paste lines. The bottom part and the top part of the pattern pieces don’t fit together well. The size is different. Other than that, it’s ok.
Pattern sizing:

The sizing is fine. It’s a kimono so it doesn’t have to be tight fitted.
My own alterations:

I lengthened the sleeves and kimono so they were longer. It fitted my project better. I didn’t make the Obi, but I think I will next time. The obi I made was a simple straight sash that I tied in the traditional way.

Fabric used:

White layer: Cotton, Red layer: Something synthetic, Top layer: Broccade and Satin.

Conclusion:

Good kimono pattern, easy to use, but not a very high quality.

The sizing is great. I didn’t change a thing abou the pattern. The shoulders are a little wide though, so sometimes I feel like the straps will slide off my shoulders.

My own alterations:

None! I didn’t change a thing. Next time I might make the waist-part a double layer of fabric as well. Because my dress is white, I felt like it wasn’t opaque enough.

Fabric used:

Cotton with a cute print.

Conclusion:

Lovely simple dress, easy to make and perfect size. It’s awesome!

Instructions:

Clear. I could make the dress without problems. Pictures are a great help, and make the text clear to understand.
Pattern quality:

The pattern quality good. Pieces fit well together. No problems.
Pattern sizing:

The sizing is all right. The dress fits well around my waist. HOWEVER: The shape is horrible. I intended to make view C with straps instead of a halter neckline, but the cups kept standing open, as well as the back of the dress. I made view B because it was the only way to fix it.
My own alterations:

Because I used a sheer fabric I used two layers of fabric. I took the cups in quite a lot, and also added extra seams at the back so the dress wouldn’t stand open. It’s impossible to try on the dress before it’s done, which makes it quite a surprise what the dress will look like in the end.
Fabric used:

Voile and satin.
Conclusion:

The sizing is horrible. I didn’t adjust the pattern pieces after finishing the dress so I probably won’t make it again. I don’t recommend this pattern at all.

Instructions:
The instructions are not very clear. I read through them twice to be able to properly understand what was meant. While sewing it started to make a lot more sense and in the end actually found the sewing of this project fairly simple!

Pattern quality:
The pattern quality is not bad. The sizing is very accurate to the sizes written on the envelope, which was why my test-suit which I noticed because I first made a total size S and with my hips it was a little too small. I do recommend a test-suit to check the fit. The stretchy inset panel pattern-piece was too big. I reduced it in size by 5cm or so to actually have to stretch it out.

Pattern sizing:
The sizing is very accurate.

My own alterations:
I made the inset panel smaller and I omitted the stirups because I didn’t think they were necessary. I also sewed in the shoulder pads between the lining and fabric instead of under the lining. I wanted to have them hidden. I also heightened the crotch because it was a little too low.

Fabric used:
Whool gabardine twill, the exact fabric that was recommended by the pattern. 😉 So happy I could find it. It’s a truly amazing fabric to work with. Nice and sturdy too.

Conclusion:
Quite a good pattern, with some minor alterations. I’m super happy with the results. The finished garment is exactly as it is in Star Trek. 😉 Best suit ever.
